UI Communication Week 2023: Competition and Exploration of Student Potential

DEPOK – The annual work program of Communication Sciences students, University of Indonesia, Communication Week (Pekom) UI 2023, will be held again in a hybrid manner. Pekom UI raised the “Image Mediated Spectacles: Creating Powerful Messages” theme this year. The event was held in the February-May 2023 period and was attended by students from various universities in Indonesia.

Pekom consists of competitions, public discussions, workshops, and company visits. All of these activities are divided into four groups according to the specializations in the UI Department of Communication Sciences of Undergraduate Program, namely advertising (Advertising War), public relations (PR Vaganza), journalism (Journalight), and media studies (Media Matters).

The activities began with a series of public discussions in February and be followed by the opening of Pekom competition. A number of universities from various regions in Indonesia attended the national competition. Participants also received briefings from practitioners in related fields in the competition through a series of workshops.

The culmination of the Pekom event took place on May 11-13, 2023 by inviting the competition’s finalists to participate in a series of final week events. For 3 days, participants not only competed in the final round. They also visited various companies in the field of communication and media, such as Prudential Syariah, Magnus Digital Indonesia, Tempo, and The Jakarta Post.

On Friday, May 12, 2023, at the UI Council Hall, participants and hundreds of students attended Pekom’s national seminar, “Expectation Against Reality: Framing Social Media in the 2024 Political Year”. The seminar was filled with a series of speakers, namely Dr. Richard Murray from the University of Queensland, Australia; President and Chief Revenue Officer of The Jakarta Post Margaretta Tiojakin; Head of Public Policy Meta Indonesia Noudhy Valadryno; and Co-Founder of Wise Choices and What Is Up Indonesia Abigail Limuria.

The series of events closed on Saturday, May 13, 2023 with a number of performances and entertainment and the announcement of Pekom 2023 winners for each competition. In the Advertising War competition, Petra Christian University Surabaya teams all won the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Meanwhile, the Media Matters competition was won by the Padjajaran University team (1st place), Gadjah Mada University (2nd place), and Ciputra University team (3rd place).

The PR Vaganza competition was won by the team from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (1st place), UPN Veteran East Java team (2nd place), and Padjadjaran University team (3rd place). Furthermore, the Journalight competition was won by the Surabaya State University team (1st place), the Bogor Djuanda University team (2nd place), and the Udayana University team (3rd place).
