DEPOK – The Undergraduate Study Program (Prodi) of the Department of Communication Sciences of FISIP UI held a big data-based data analysis seminar. The presence of big data is considered increasingly important both for industry and the academic world.
The seminar, which took place on Friday (4/11/2022), presented the theme “Utilization of Big Data Analytics in Developing Appropriate and Sharp Communication Campaigns.” The activity presented two speakers, Chief Executive Officer of PT Kazee Digital Indonesia I Made Ariya Sanjaya and Head of Undergraduate Study Program of Department of Communication Sciences of FISIP UI and a permanent lecturer, Whisnu Triwibowo.
Ariya explained that data analytics helps various groups, both from industry and government, for taking decisions that can be accounted for. The reason is such decisions are not made based on intuition alone. However, there is data-in this case big data-becoming the basis for policy making.
The lecturer at Bandung Institute of Technology continued there are at least four stages in big data analytics. First, data source collection that is collecting all the data in big data. Second, data preparation or preparing data to be ready for analysis. Third is data analysis process; fourth is data interpretation as needed.
Ariya further explained that the data collection stage is the most challenging part. The data obtained cannot immediately be used but it must firstly be cleaned from the noise.
Big Data in Research
Meanwhile, Whisnu Triwibowo shared the utilization of big data in the academic realm. He explained that the big data collection model also has weaknesses. “Mining this data is really inaccurate because when other people do it with different accounts, it also produces different data,” Whisnu said in his presentation.
He added that the fundamental difference between using big data analytics for commercial and academic purposes lies in the initial step. Academic projects start from a hypothesis that will be tested when doing data analytics.
Whisnu added, the use of data also has ethics, especially in the academic realm. “If we look at the data exposed to the public, we can read it freely. But if it refers to scientific disciplines, for academic purposes, consent from the users is still needed, which we can send via direct message on Twitter or Instagram,” he said.
The potential of big data is so great driving the Undergraduate Program of Department of Communication Sciences of FISIP UI is also examining the potential entry of data analytics as a new course. “Possibility of data analytics will be included in the curriculum adjusted to the needs of communication,” said Erwin Agustian Panigoro, Secretary of the Undergraduate Program of Communication Sciences of FISIP UI, who also acted as moderator at the event.
