The Department of Communication held a public lecture on online journalism, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Auditorium of the Communication Building FISIP UI. The material was delivered by Dr. Ngu Ik Ying, who is Head of Department of Media and Communication, Curtin University. The event was opened by the Head of the Department of Communication Science, Hendriyani, S.Sos., M.Si., Dr. Ngu Ik Ying.
The lecture, entitled “Online Video Journalism: A Practical Approach” was intended for the international class program and regular classes whose classes were transferred to the public lecture. The seminar class covered the fundamentals of journalism. Dr. Ying delved into the essential practices and principles behind online journalism, including news values (news value) and other aspects that affect journalistic quality such as journalistic ethics and principles.
In the ever-evolving digital age, online journalism has become increasingly important in delivering information to the global community. The internet allows faster and wider access to news, but it also poses new challenges to the practice of journalism. One important aspect of journalism that Dr. Ying says is often overlooked is news value ( news value).
Participants were introduced to the concepts of news value such as actuality (timeliness), accuracy (accuracy), relevance, interestinterest) and many more. Discussion sessions were conducted to understand how to determine effective news value in the context of online journalism. At the end of the event, the participants were given about 30 minutes to practice the principles of journalism. They were divided into groups and then invited to make a video report. By doing so, participants are expected to apply the insights gained in practice to improve the quality and impact of online news in the future.
